The Uni Shop - Frequently Asked Questions
What is This Site
The Uni Shop is a free online shop where you can advertise your
stuff for sale, or look for things to buy near your uni. To learn more,
just follow this link: What is This Site?
How is The Uni Shop Different to Other Sites?
Firstly, The Uni Shop is free. You don't need any credit card or
payment information to sign up. Just stick in your email address and
your nickname and you can immediately begin advertising your stuff or
buy things.
The Uni Shop is not an auction site. How many of us can be bothered
to wait around for an auction to end? Then finding out that someone has
bid higher than you in the last second.
This site is a simple system where visitors can make an advert in
seconds and it will remain here for as long as they like. If you are
interested in an ad, you can contact the advertiser immediately and
take it from there.
The Uni Shop doesn't stop there. We also have an accommodation
section. Landlords, you can advertise your property for free here, and
wait for the enquiries to roll in. If you're a student, you have
immediate access to property ideally located for your Uni.
Are you somebody offering a useful service to students? Uni notice
boards are usually plastered with ads of people willing to check the
grammar of dissertations, or help with tutoring. You too can advertise
here for free.
You will also find listings for summer or term time jobs near your
Uni. If you are an employer, feel free to advertise your job vacancies
here, where you can target a particular university.
How many times have you searched the entire university campus
looking for that person who bought the last 100 tickets to the big union event?
Chances are, he/she is advertising them on here - so keep your eyes
peeled under the tickets and events sections for your uni.
If you are organising an event, such as a hall barbeque or a night
at the union, you can also advertise that here for free too.
In fact, if there is something that you feel should be added to The
Uni Shop, why not post a message in the message boards, where you can
also chat with other UK students...
Your private details will not be given to any third parties.
I have something I want to advertise, what do I do?
Easy. First, sign up for a free account. This literally takes
seconds, and you can supply as much information as you like.
Secondly, you'll notice a link to the top left of this page
allowing you to "Place a Free Listing".
From here, you can select the type of item you want to advertise and
you can start entering the details. It is a good idea to choose a
suitable category for your item, so people can find it quicker. If the
category you are after is not there, select a temporary one and stick a
note up on the message boards under the "Requests" forum. I'll then
create a new category for you.
The process for placing an ad should be pretty self explanatory, but
if you have a question, check out the message boards and post a
message.
Once you have placed your ad, it will appear in your profile when
you are logged in. From this point on, you can put your feet up. You
will be notified directly if someone is interested in your ad. If you
like, you can check your advert from time to time to see how many
people have viewed it.
The Uni Shop will do all the work for you, and over time, your
advertised item will begin to appear in search engines on the internet.
You will be pleased to hear that The Uni Shop will also create an A4
poster your your advert.
If you visit your advert page (by following the link in your profile)
you will have the option of downloading your poster. You can print this
poster and stick it up (or get your mates to stick it up for you)
wherever you like. This should greatly improve your chances of finding
people who are interested in it.
Don't worry about deleting your ad. You will be sent a reminder in
30 days from the date you place your advert, and if you want it to be
removed, do nothing. If you want to keep it up here for another 30
days, just click the link in the email you receive.
That's all!, if you have any questions, post something on the
message boards.
I am Looking for Something to Buy, What do I do?
Easy. You can check out the available categories on the left of the
page. So for example, if you are after a Text Book on Contract Law,
take a look in Books, then the subcategory Academic, and then the
subcategory Law.
You will then see a list of adverts that have been placed in this
category. Clicking on them will take you to their main page where you
can view further details.
If you like what you see, and would like to contact the advertiser,
use the details at the bottom. It is a good idea to send a message
directly to the advertiser at the bottom of the page, or you can use
the contact details that the advertiser has displayed on the page.
Note, you must be logged in to get access to the contact details and
messaging feature so sign up for a free account. This literally takes
seconds, and you can supply as much information as you like.
An alternative way of finding what you are looking for is to use the
search link at the top of the page. Enter a few keywords and hit
"Go" and you will be presented with a list of matching adverts.
You might only be interested in items at a specific university, so
you can filter the site accordingly. To do this, just select the university
at the top of the page where it says "The Shop at". Setting this filter will only list items where
the advertiser has specified the University of your choice.
If you want to clear the filter, just hit the "Clear" button at the
top of the page.
If you can't find the item you are looking for, why not place an
advert of your own? A "Wanted" advert.
If you are logged in, you can place a free advert using the link on the
left of the page. Here, you can select "Wanted item!" in the drop down
box and fill in the details of what you are looking for.
Once you have filled in all the information, your advert will remain
on this site, and visitors can view it. They might have what you are
looking for and can contact you directly via your advert.
In fact, just as any advertised item on this site, The Uni Shop will
also produce an A4 "Wanted" poster for you. You can download this by
clicking on your advert (accessible via your profile to the right of
the screen). Download the A4 Poster (which is in PDF format and
requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) and print it off. You can then stick it
up around your university so people know what you are looking for.
Hopefully things should go smoothly for you. If there are any problems,
check out the message boards for help or advice.
Junk Email & Privacy
The Uni Shop will not give any of your private personal details
to third parties. The only time any of your details will be
visible is on any advert you place on this site. Don't worry, you
have full control over which details you want to display. You
don't actually have to display any of your personal contact
details (which might be a bit pointless, because no-one will be able to contact you
about your advert).
Your email address will not be put on any spam list or given to
any other organisation.
In fact, The Uni Shop is very protective over the email
addresses of its members.
Did you know, one of the main reasons people receive spam
email, is because their email address is listed in text format on
a web page somewhere on the internet.
There are sophisticated spam systems out there, which crawl
pages on the internet, and extract any text that it sees with the
'@' symbol in it. These email addresses then get added to a spam
marketing list. Sadly,
these are normally email addresses of unsuspecting internet users
who have posted their email address somewhere on the net.
You don't have to worry about posting your email address in any
of your adverts. The Uni Shop uses sophisticated security
techniques to ensure there is no way of a user's email address
being "harvested" by spam systems.
If you have any more concerns over this, feel free to post a
question on the message boards.
How do I use the message boards?
The message boards allow you to post questions to the
webmaster, and interact with other students.
To keep your identity private, your message board nickname can be anything you want.
This allows all users to join in with the message boards openly and anonymously.
Upon registering at The Uni Shop, a message board persona will be created for you automatically using the name you specify.
Please be advised not to give out your personal details on the
message boards.
