What Is This Site?
Welcome to my website. I started this website in
2002 while I was in my first year of University.
Basically back then, I wanted to buy a cheapo used mini-fridge to
keep in my room in halls, so I could store the regular staple foods of
a student in my room, accessible with minimal effort...
At around the same time, I also needed to start looking at buying
books for my course - and thought it would be a good idea to find
someone in the year above me to buy them off, seeing as they don't need
them any more.
Anyway, the problem was, there was no place to find these things at
my Uni. I didn't like the idea of driving around London looking for a
fridge all day, or pestering every 2nd year to sell me their books. I
eventually decided to throw together a quick website for my halls of
residence so people would be able to advertise their stuff for sale, in
the hope that someone near me might have what I was looking for...
I soon found myself getting quite carried away with it all, and
figured there must be other people, in other halls, at other Unis who
would also benefit from this information. 3 years, and much blood sweat and tears later, you now have The Uni Shop.
Sadly, I am no longer a student, so my quest for finding a
mini-fridge is now a bit pointless. Even so, I have a feeling this site
will prove very useful for people with stuff to sell, and people who
have things they need to buy.
At The Uni Shop you can post items for sale free of charge - so other people (if you're
lucky - people at your own University) can buy them from you. You don't need to
provide any credit card information or proof of identity. Simply provide as much
contact information as you like - and anyone who wishes to buy your item can
contact you.
I remember the walkway at University would be totally plastered with
posters listing things for sale. Occasionally I would see something
really interesting, but would always be in a rush to lectures, or had
to be somewhere and would miss out. Sadly, this wasn't very useful for the seller either. I often
thought how useful it would be if there was some central website where
I could actually see what was being sold at my Uni.
Now there is.
The Uni Shop will also assist you in marketing your advertisement around your university campus!.
When you place an advertisement on this site, within seconds, a custom made A4 poster will be designed free of charge especially for you.
You can save this poster, and email it to your friends. Most importantly, you can print it out and stick it up on your university
notice boards
and walkways so fellow students can contact you directly. If you have
something to sell, you'll be seriously unlucky if The Uni Shop can't sell it. Remember, your advert will be accessible in Google too!
All products advertised tell you which university they are located near, so
collecting or delivering your purchase couldn't be easier.
If you are looking for something to buy you can search or browse through the ads on this site,
and filter everything for your own University.
If you can't find what you are looking for, don't worry.
The Uni Shop will gladly save your request.
You can freely post details of your "Wanted Item" on this site, and other visitors are able to contact you
if they can obtain what you are looking for!
Registration takes approximately 45 seconds, allows you to place adverts, and buy the products available on this site, all for free.
